Gunn Tennis PARENTS INFO 2012

I want all parents to understand you are my best eyes, you know and spend most time with your child, so this is why at Gunn Tennis we request you talk directly to Greg Gunn director of tennis re: any tennis related concerns. The information is not to alienate parents but to clarify roles and what a High performance coaching program requires from YOU as a parent. Remember your main role is to support your child and understand their frustrations. I ask all parents to discuss all matters of tennis with Greg Gunn director of coaching and NEVER discuss tactics, mental approach, game play NOTHING to do with your child’s TENNIS unless first discussed with the Director of Coaching.

Parental role and support :

Support your children's decision to specialize in tennis.

  • Show great interest in your child's sport.
  • REMEMBER it is time consuming (athletes age 10 to 16years need approx 10 to 15 hours week to develop their tennis skills.) This is not just on court play. And you as a parents also need to be committed re: transport, costs, committed hours, shoulder to lean on, assist the coach with what you see in your child moods and injury., ect….YOU ALSO HAVE A MAJOR ROLE.
  • Keep winning and losing in a healthy perspective. KNOW what a good coaching program requires…….
  • Be Positive, yet realistic, in your belief of your child's talents and the level of development. Let the coach know of  players concerns or dreams.
  • Be Content to have your child focus solely on school ( essential in development pathway) and tennis sport achievement, alleviating any pressure on players to find part-time work.
  • Assist your children to fight setbacks that hinder training progression.
  • Make a financial and time commitment to your child. BUT NEVER DISCUSS with your child…. This adds undue pressures.
  • Be aware of different modes of scholastic fulfillment and understand a sports pathway is also a very successful pathway and the time your child spends developing these essential skills will later be an advantage to their life skills.
  • Evaluate what's best for child's tennis.  DO THIS WITH YOUR COACH...Agree with the coach/ school teachers as to merits of tournaments, competitions, camps and programs. ESSENTIAL….
  • Reinforce the appreciation of different cultures.
  • MAKE sure this is your childs DREAM not YOURS…..
  • All tennis related programming and development to be undertaken by the COACH…And discussed with the COACH.
  • Be prepared to enlist your child into designated tournaments and events at Gunn Tennis request.Note entry into tournaments to be assesed by Greg Gunn prior to entry.
  • GUNN TENNIS WANTS TO KNOW ALL TOURNAMENTS AND TRAINING,  FOR ALL PERFORMANCE ATHLETES…. AS ESSENTIAL IN PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY
